Obituary:

"In Memory of Filden Smith
Our community was made sad on last Monday morning, November 28th when the news began to spread that just at dawn God in his wisdom caused the earthly life of Mr. Filden Smith to cease. He was ill only one day and his condition was not thought to be serious not even by ones at his bedside thought death so near. "Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as you think not the Son of God cometh." God had spared this father for a long time, being ninety one years of age, the oldest man of the community. Mr. Smith fought in the War Between the States and dearly loved the south land. He will be greatly missed in the community where he has spent most of his life, and his last days were spent in close communion with his Savior. Though an old man, Sunday found him at church where he will be missed, but no where will he be missed more than in the home where his footsteps will he heard no more, and his accustomed place around the hearthside and the table will be vacant forever. While it is hard for his friends and loved ones to give him up here on earth, there is the sweet consolation in the assurance which he gave before his death that he was prepared to meet his Master and that now he is sweetly resting in Heaven. Just three short years ago, his companion left him for her heavenly home and since that time, Mr. Smith has been watching the river, waiting for a good place to cross, and Monday God called him and he answered "Here am I."
Farewell dear father, there is nothing left to us but a tender memory and the image of a pleasant face we will carry on our hearts through all the changing years. And when the veil shall be lifted that separated us from that invisible world, we hope we shall see it again.
The surviving children are: Mrs. Vester Hale, Joe, S.L., Ben, of this county, and Mrs. Bob Stone, of Whitmire.
Funeral services conducted by his pastor, Rev. M.M. McCuen, and beautiful were the tributes he paid this ______er (brother?). Interment in Cedar Grove cemetery."
