THE EARLY BATTENS AND STARLINGS - James W. Batten

Adam Starling was living in Northampton County and he decided to move his family southward to Johnston County for the purpose of acquiring land. On December 17, 1783 he negotiated with William Folk to purchase 170 acres for the sum of 90 pounds (British money) . This 170 acre tract was a part of the original grant to Ainboroghs Blackman. As the years passed Adam Starling purchased additional land and received grants from the State of North Carolina. By 1800 he was listed as a "Planter" and land owner. "Planter" was an honorable title because it indicated he had considerable land holdings, was a leader in his community, was respected by citizens, and owned at least twenty slaves. From 1783 until 1805 Adam Starling had acquired and owned 2335 acres on the North and South sides of Little Creek. He and his wife had two very attractive daughters; their names were Ruth and Jemima. Abraham and Samuel Batten were "country neighbors" to the young Starling girls and within a few months they had become engaged. On October 8, 1802 a double wedding was held and Samuel Batten was united in marriage to daughter Jemima and Abraham took Ruth for his bride. Farming was the occupation and the sons-in-law worked hard and met with the favor of Adam Starling. On May 11, 1805 Adam Starling presented deeds to his two sons-in-law and the deeds were probated on May 25, 1805. For love, good will, and affection for his son-in-law Abraham, a deed was granted for 293 acres on the North side of Little Creek and for his son-in-law Samuel, 293 acres were deeded on the South side of Little Creek.
Abraham lived happily with his beloved wife Ruth, until 1858 when Ruth passed away. Samuel's wife Jemima, died an untimely death in 1815. On January 25, 1816 Samuel married Barbara Starling, his first wife's sister. (The graves of Abraham and Ruth have been preserved and are located on the original Batten homestead 11/2 miles south of Micro on Interstate 95.)
