Alexander Southerland came to America under peculiar circumstances. He was a student at the University of Edinborough, and with a party of college boys one day boarded a vessel to see the sights. The ship sailed away with them, and upon reaching Boston the students were sold to pay their passage. Southerland must have liked the new country at any rate, he remained and later married Mrs. Betsey Williams.
